Microbiology & Tropical Diseases

- There will be two symposia in Microbiology & Tropical Diseases. The first symposium will be an update on the current diagnosis and treatment of ocular infections. The audience will be presented with the most up-to-date information that will assist them in managing these problems. Topics include: "Parasitic Keratitis," "Viral Keratitis," "Conjunctivitis," "Fungal Keratitis," "Bacterial Keratitis," and "Blepharitis." (List of Chairs of Scientific Sessions).

The second symposium will cover current controversies in ocular infections. These include: "Prophylaxis for endophthalmitis," "Treatment of Keratitis after Refractive Surgery," "Contact Lens Keratitis," "Keratoplasty Timing in Infections," "Endoscopy for Dacryocystitis" and "Confocal Microscopy".

The course on Tropical Eye Diseases will present an update on the current diagnosis and management of Ocular TB, Congenital & Acquired Ocular Toxoplasmosis, Ocular Schistomomiasis and Ocular leptospirasis. Specific topics on Ocular manifestations in Amazon (Onchocerciasis, Lepra, Trachoma and Malaria) and Fungal Infection in Southern Taiwan will also be discussed.

- All the invited speakers are internationally renowned experts in their areas.

Experts in the diagnosis and management of strabismus will present original material during seminars, panels, and workshops at the World Ophthalmology Congress 2008.
- These presentations will be offered by 30 speakers from 17 different countries making this one of the most diverse as well as comprehensive offerings ever presented on the subject. Sessions will be chaired and co-chaired by world authorities, both local and international.(List of Chairs of Scientific Session)
- The information imparted during the 9 sessions will be on a variety of topics, ranging from the management of complicated strabismus, to the latest techniques in amblyopia care, as well as the utilisation of telemedicine to deal with strabismus in the developing world.
- Participation in these sessions will provide an important insight into the most up-to-date thinking in the area of strabismus.

Information technology has the potential to impact the practice of ophthalmology in a big way. Today doctors from next door to half way around the world can expand their reach by sharing detailed information for patient care and teaching.
- At the forthcoming WOC meeting, panels, seminars, and workshops will describe the latest in screening techniques, methods for on-line teaching, and programs offering expert consultation at no cost to doctors in the developing world. (List of Chairs of Scientific Sessions)
- Doctors at any stage of their professional life will be made aware of the importance of information technology with messages delivered by experts from all parts of the world.

Sightseeing in Hong Kong

The Peak Tram and Peak Tower
Dating back to 1888, The Peak Tram is a steep funicular railway that allows passengers to enjoy the panoramic views of Hong Kong. At the top, the Peak Tower is an attraction itself, with fun shopping, dining and entertainment.

Hong Kong Park
Overlooked by the towers of Pacific Place and Admiralty on one side and Central on the other, the park features a hot house, tai chi garden, waterfall and Museum of Tea Ware. Admission is free.

Wong Tai Sin Temple and Chi Lin Nunnery
The Taoist temple dedicated to Wong Tai Sin is a hotspot for locals and tourists

Located just 15 minutes walk from the Diamond Hill MTR, the Chi Lin Nunnery proudly stands as the largest building in the world to be constructed without nails (http://www.chilin.org).

Hong Kong Zoological and Botanical Gardens
Home to eight endangered species, the city zoo successfully breeds rare birds and orangutans. Established in 1864, the park retains all the Victorian accents from that era and is an idyllic spot in the middle of the city. Admission is free.
